CVS Woes

Published May 31, 2004

Spent most of the morning in a battle with CVS to make sure everything in skEdit's repository is up-to-date. CVS just loves Apple's .nib files. Really frustrating; several hours blown.

The reason for my troubles is that, because I'm working on some larger new features, I had created separate test projects, and am now trying to incorporate the new code into the main skEdit project. xCode's built-in SCM features did not handle this very well, so I had to drop down to the CLI for CVS. Then things go more confusing, as xCode was not showing the same information as the CLI, and the nibs weren't imported correctly.

However, I think I now have everything in the repository so that one could do a checkout and the project would build and work correctly. I'm going to be looking into alternatives (particularly Subversion and Perforce). I like the idea of SCM, but it seems like the problems I have had with it make it almost not worth it, especially since I'm a lone developer.

that would allow parallel translation works!
