Overdue Update

Published April 21, 2005

Been quite some time since I've posted. School has been making me work very long days. I generally leave the house around 9 AM and then don't stop working until 1-2 AM. Fortunately, things are starting to draw to a close, so these 16 hour days should be over soon.

Anyway, have a couple exciting (for me at least) pieces of news.

First, this evening I won the Cocoa Programming Contest run by the Mac User Group on campus SIGMAC. My entry was a tournament planning application. Pretty simple, but nice, little application that I may eventually flesh out into a full product. My prize was a 512 MB iPod shuffle.

The bigger news though is that I've been offered an internship at Apple this summer, working on the Setup & Installation team. I'm not clear on what I'm allowed to discuss about what I'll be working on, so I won't say anything :) However, I'm pretty excited about it, and I'll be moving out to Cupertino on May 8th.

At this point, I'm sure many of you are wondering what will become of skEdit. After all, it's already been delayed because of my crazy schedule at school. Development will continue. v3.6 will bring a bunch of cool new features, with many more in the pipeline after that. In all honesty, I'll probably have more time for skEdit while working full-time for Apple than I do now, as school does not constrain itself to 9-5, M-F. I'll certainly be up to my eyeballs in Cocoa though...

I think you're going to find pretty quickly that neither does work constrain itself to 9-5, M-F. :-) I had the same idea as you before I went on my first co-op, but my illusions were quickly dispelled.

Anyway, congrats on the position with Apple! I'm sure you will have a fun summer and meet a lot of great people.

The experience at Apple should be a great experience. Congratulations!

Congrats on winning the Cocoa Programming Contest, and the internship at Apple. That should prove an excellent experience, and damn fun to I bet.

Keep up the good work!

Congrats on the iPod Shuffle and the Apple internship. Please post about your experiences at Apple. I would love to have an insiders take on the work environment/atmosphere there. Very intriguing.

Hi Tom,

I'll definitely post about things I'm allowed to post about. I will have to check with my supervisor about what's allowed by the intellectual property agreement. Don't want to get fired for blogging...

Congratulations. Not to throw a wet blanket over things, but please read very carefully all papers that are being signed, and even if they say "we'd never enforce that", have it taken out. I wouldn't want to see the skEdit code taken from you because of a "we own everything from you" clause. And this is even more dangerous with a new project that you might start.

I read everything carefully, and listed skEdit as a "Prior Invention", so they can't make any claim over it. As for new inventions, unless it "directly relates" to Apple's business, they can't make any claim. I'll have to be careful there. Of course, I can't use any equipment at work or they can claim some ownership.

Trust me, I wasn't going to give up skEdit for a summer internship :)

This was the story that I was remembering: http://www.thinksecret.com/news/netflixfanatic.html
