skEdit v4.0 Released

Published December 15, 2007

I have just posted skEdit v4.0, and with it a new iteration of the website. This is a big release and quite a bit has changed.

First, some policy changes. In all versions prior to v4.0, skEdit came with free lifetime upgrades. Starting with v4.0, most upgrades will be free, but I will charge for major changes. Of course, all users who purchased skEdit before v4.0 will continue to receive free lifetime upgrades. Because of this change, skEdit now uses license files. If you've purchased skEdit already, login to your account or use the license recovery feature within skEdit to download your license. Finally, there has been a price bump from $24.95 to $34.95.

skEdit itself has quite a few changes. See the full feature list, and a more detailed changeset. Some highlights:

  • Redesigned remote files interface
  • Code folding
  • Extensible code completion with code indexing
  • Easy addition/customization of languages
  • Lots of interface refreshing throughout the app

Purchase skEdit. Download skEdit.

Great work, it looks fantastic.

Fantastic work. I can´t wait to edit my next files.

By fixing some bugs skEdit is my favorite editor again. Thanks a lot. Jan

Thank you!

Looks and feels great.

Congratulations on the release! Version 4 looks great, huge improvement from version 3. Website looks very spiffy too.

Joe Thompson on December 15, 2007 #

Congrats! Glad to see the improvements in the app and the website! Great stuff all around.

My only concern is that this amazing piece of software still gets a bit crazy in the sidebar when you dig deep into a site (WordPress is a killer). Am I missing the option to change it way from "list view"?

So close to being perfect in my mind!

Jay on December 15, 2007 #

There is no option for that, but I'll keep it in mind.

Sean Kelly on December 15, 2007 #

Good job Sean, the new site looks great! skEdit has always be my editor of choice and it really is showing it's maturity now - it one hell of a good program. I can only imagine how good it must feel to get this release out the door.

Sean - how do I "fold" my own code - i.e. just select some code, and then arbitrarily have it fold down ?

I see the expand/collapse arrows in the gutter for pre-defined language constructs, (such as body../body in html) but no way of selecting some random text and then folding it..?

(also, the help tried to open up in VLC when i selected it - running on leopard if that makes any diff).

Congrats in the new version!

d.

There currently is not away to fold arbitrary ranges of text. It's something I'll consider for a future release.

Excellent update! Love the way remote sites are now handled, the mixed projects method is great. Also really appreciate tabbed windows outside of projects. My only minor wish is that invisible files could be seen since I've got a few projects with .htaccess files. skEdit was my favorite editor before, now it's even more so. Thank you Sean!

Neil on December 15, 2007 #

Neil, you can tweak which hidden files are displayed in the Project View preferences.

Hi Sean,

v4.0 just arrive to meet my new MacBookPro with Leopard !

I can't work on my web sites without skEdit. It's easy and powerfull.

I agree with your new price policy. Developing and mantain a software today is a heavy job.

Riccardo.

Congrats Sean. I've watched each beta release improve. After the very first beta releases I couldn't go back to v3.

skEdit continues to be the only editor with everything I need (and not a heap of stuff I don't need). Great work.

Hi,

I like the new release quite a lot, congrats Sean! But why has the code completion for CSS been removed? Or is it some upgrade bug?

Sascha Schieferdecker on December 20, 2007 #

It's not been removed. Please use the contact page to send more details about where it's not working for you. Thanks.

Sean Kelly on December 20, 2007 #

Thanks for the update, looks great.

Noticed something a little odd though, was wondering whats the reasoning behind leaving a .skproj file in the project root directory?

For people who work with subversion its a little annoying to have to exclude that file from versioning, plus i've never seen an app leave behind files like that and believe the previous version of skEdit didn't do that, though i'm not sure how it handled keeping track of projects.

Was a little disappointed in the function of multi file search, before i could simply drag a folder in to search. Now it seems the only option is to do the entire site, the file or all open files. When working on a web app that has thousands upon thousands of files its unnecessary to search the entire tree for a class. It'd be nice to have the option to search within any directory you want.

Hope my above points were constructive as I love the app, I'm not resistant to change just changes that alter previously available functionality.

Thanks,

Stu

skEdit previously stored the project settings in a .skEdit file in the root project directory. I moved to using an explicit file so that it could be more easily tracked by SCM software. However, I will likely add a way in a future release to collect the .skproj files into a central location rather than having them in each project.

Searching on an arbitrary directory will make a return in a future release as well.

Cheers for the explanations Sean, one of the many reasons why I use your app is the ability to leave comments like the one I did and have you explain your reasoning. Thanks again, Stu

Stuart Trann on December 31, 2007 #

Thx Sean !

Just downloaded between a short update on a website, cooking pastas, answering the phone.

I like it and I find it well balanced. Well done.

Congrats (x1000)

Thanks a lot for this new release. Best editor out there!

One problem though: I've just now installed Leopard and the cursor keeps flickering in skEdit whenever I move it. Any ideas?

Jannis Borgers on January 9, 2008 #

Looking good. A few thing I noticed:

• When I launch skEdit, sites that are on a network drive that isn't connected aren't shown until I relaunch the app. Is this going to change back to how it was in future updates?

• The script and style tag don't seem to get attribute hints anymore.

Otherwise, this seems to be great update.

Stijn De Lathouwer on January 11, 2008 #

Great job. I love the code folding feature!

One thing though: code completion for php functions (i.e. the display of the function's parameters) is no longer working for me... any ideas?

Jurgen on January 21, 2008 #

Whoops. Never mind, saw it hidden in the pref pane just now. Would be nice though if, as in vs 3.x, the code hinting followed your typing (i.e. first parameter is string, you enter that, then it hints that second parameter is a variable).

Hope you don't mind my naggin' -- I just want my favourite editor to become even better! :-)
